In the spirit of the best
terrain parks in the country, DMR will create the Paradise Freestyle
Arena for Winter 03-04. Running more than half a mile and 600
vertical feet down riders' right of Paradise on the front side, the park will
feature a 450-foot halfpipe with 15 foot walls, boxes, more rail than the
Durango & Silverton Historic Railroad, hits, spines and tabletops of all
sizes and shapes. The Pitchfork Park will now include all sizes of hits for
first timers as well as those looking to hone their skills.
The park will start adjacent to the Paradise Race Arena just below the top of
Lift 1 with a section of transitionable regular and table hits, one flowing
into the next. The following middle section will feature rails, boxes and custom
hard features, including a new C-Box. As Paradise rolls down mountain again, the
most will be made of the steep pitches to maximize straight, spine and quarter
hits. The halfpipe will be located near the bottom of Paradise, next to major
snowmaking equipment, allowing for an earlier start creating the pipe and a
possible opening by the holidays. As with all Eric Mischker's parks, a smooth
exit transition will give riders one last thrill.
The beauty of the new park
is its location-after the exit, riders can choose from favorites lower Hades,
Pandemonium, or Catharsis, getting in another 900 vertical and some of the best
rolling terrain and powder stashes on the mountain. Once down, the six-pack
takes riders back to the top in just 6 minutes to do it all again.
In a unique arrangement, riders from local Durango High
School will be taking a Fabrication class with the express intent of creating
features for the park. They will be working on several curved and kinked rails,
with the teacher certifying the welds to satisfy US Forest Service
requirements.
DMR's Expression Session Freeride Series will also move to
the new park, with the Jib Jam on January 24, Big Air on February 1, Halfpipe on
February 22, and the Southwest Slopestyle Championships on March 20. This event
grows year-by-year, attracting the best riders in the
southwest
DMR would like to announce
the creation of the DMR Freeride Team.DMR has a history of developing athletes
young and then sending them out onto the National tours, and in that spirit this
team will be made up solely of kids 10-15. The Resort will work with the current
Purgatory Freestyle Team to build a roster of skiers, telemarkers and boarders
looking to take the next step in their riding. Look out for DMR's new grom
Freeride Team in the Paradise and Pitchfork Terrain Parks and at the comps
in your backyard.
